Oddpodz recieves half-million dollars funding

September 2nd, 2006

Social networking site for creative people, Oddpodz , had recieved half-million dollars funding. Oddpodz located in Tampa, Floarida was founded by Jocelyn Ring and Karen Post .

Oddpodz will be a brand for creatives. The word Oddpod (plural, Oddpodz) will become a noun describing a unique, creative person. Oddpod nation is community of independent doers, free-range thinkers and non-conformist change agents who make significant contributions to create a better world.

Oddpodz’s site is mostly under construction with main focus areas being the Marketplace, Play, Brain Juice, Vent, Museum, and Odderations. Most parts of the site are pretty abstruse and heavily focused towards people with creative and artistic interests. Oddpodz has branded store, The Odditeaz™ Store, which sells T-shirts and are planning to upgrade to a full marketplace consisting of select merchant offering odd and uncommon products. Oddpodz Museum will be the networking area for creative characters to share and colloborate. To learn more about Oddpodz head over to their blog.

Treemo empowering self-expression

September 2nd, 2006

Another member is all set to join the Video Broadcasting war. Treemo a Seattle, WA based startup, is working aggressively towards enabling sharing of digital media, empowering self-expression, and transforming creativity into action.

Features: You can browse/search for media in the “Explore” section, which has the Recent, Featured, Most viewed, Most Favorited, Most commented, Top Tags, and search features. As in Youtube, each users personal area is called Channel. Once in their channel, user can manage and view their profile, content sets, recent uploads, network, favorites, and recent comments. One of the unusual parts of Treemo is - Content sets - which can consist any kind of media inside them including audio, video, images, and even text. This is a first time I came across combination of these four, especially text, in a media-sharing site. Managing your content is very easy with Ajax based drag-drop delete, and quick search facility. Each image in Treemo can be favorited, tracked, shared, embedded, have description, tags, and comments. For videos you can also set location and whether you want to have advertising in the video. There seems to plans for revenue sharing in these advertisements, although no specific information is available. You can also get RSS feeds for user channels to keep track of your friends. Right now each users get 200 MB of disk space and can upload videos less than 20 MB.
Since Treemo heavily bent towards being a Mobile App, you can perform most these functions from your cell phone. Once you get the channel URL from Treemo to your cell phone, you can login and start viewing, editing content. You can Upload picture from cell phone, create blog entry, add or edit titles, descriptions, set privacy preferences and more. To upload media to Treemo, phones that support multimedia messaging (MMS) or can email attachments can be used.
Keeping an eye on the student and teenager community Treemo has a module - Get Involved - where they help users recycle their e-waste like digital cameras, camcorders, and mobile phones. You can recycle (reuse/donate) your digital camera by giving it to an aspiring student photographer. For any digital camera donated Treemo will give the user 3 months free service (maybe more disk space and bandwidth) and a nifty recycle icon will appear next to your icon or name
I came across few issues while trying out Treemo, one of them being that I was able to add myself to my own network, which obviously doesn’t make sense. Another feature I didn’t understand why each user could create only 3 personal groups. Also I had problems getting upload status messages, even when uploads finished successfully.

Future: Treemo is joining the toughest area on the web to grow that is already dominated by Youtube, Goggle, Yahoo, AOL, and many more. Treemo has a distinguishing feature, as compared to the other major, of advertisement revenue sharing but don’t really know if it can help Treemo stay afloat or make users switch from competitors to Treemo.

You can always add me to your channel (user: vivpuri)

Zazzle - Use Create-Product to earn 17% of sale

September 1st, 2006

ZazzleZazzle, the customized products marketplace for consumer enthusiasts, has announced a new marketing tool - Create-a-Product API. Idea is pretty simple, easily integrable, and great for websites having huge number of photographs. Basically visitors on your website or blog can automatically generate customized products from any image or text on your web site, and for any purchase made from your API links, you will earn 17% in commission(10% Royalty + 7% Referral). You can even add logo or text to each of the products created using the API. Custom Apparel’s, US Postage, Custom Mugs, and custom cards can be purchased using this API.

Setting up Create-a-Product API is easy. You need to get your contributor and associates account on Zazzle, create your product template to define how your products will be generated, create the links and add them to your site and you are all set.

I think this is a smart thinking on the part of Zazzle given that all kinds of widgets are floating around in the blogosphere. It will be a nice idea to integrate Create-a-Product API with major photo sharing sites like Flickr/Photobucket(copyright issues still remain), or stock photo sales sites like Gettyimages/Fotolia. All someone needs to do now is write a small plugin for wordpress and most of the blogs are set to earn.

Zazzle.com, based out of Menlo Park, CA, was founded in 2003 and is one of the well funded companies in the area of customized products. Zazzle has received $16 million in Series A round of financing in July, 2005 from Google fame venture capitalists John Doerr and Ram Shriram. Zazzle was founded by Robert Beaver and his two sons, Bobby and Jeff who were still attending Stanford University.

August 31st, 2006

Skype announced that it is introducing new cordless phones that will not require a running computer. The new class of phone will enable used to make and receive calls over PC and PSTN/POTS (landline phones). The first series of products to be launched in this class are the Philips VOIP841 cordless phone and NETGEAR’s cordless phone for Skype. This development was long expected from Skype, and is definitely good news for skype users, and ebay, and not so good for vonage where problems never seem to end.

“We are broadening our reach to mass consumers by offering them the opportunity to communicate via Skype without having to be tied to the computer,” said Stefan Öberg, general manager, desktop and hardware at Skype. “Skype has already introduced Wi-Fi phones and Skype for PocketPC wireless. Now Skype is taking the next step and working together with Philips and NETGEAR to introduce PC-free cordless phones. The cordless phones for Skype launched today, give Skype users the flexibility to enjoy free Skype to Skype calls and inexpensive calls to ordinary and mobile phones anywhere in the house, at any time without a running computer.”

Skype users will be able to sing into their account from the phones itself and download their contacts. Users will be able search contacts on their phone, which will be able to support an integrated contact list of skype contacts and traditional phone numbers.

Each of these cordless phones will have a remote DECT base station, which can be plugged into both the broadband connection and the traditional phone lines. The system will handle both Skype and ordinary calls in one phone, presented through an easy-to-use, user interface. Both the Philips and NETGEAR cordless phones boast a full color graphic display, simplified calling features with an integrated contact list, and an enhanced speakerphone with great voice clarity.

Premium Skype features, including SkypeOutTM for inexpensive international calls to traditional landlines and mobile phones, SkypeInTM to receive calls from landline or mobile phones on Skype, and Skype Voicemail will all be easily accessible through the phone.

The Skype Certified Philips VoIP841 cordless phone will be available for the 2006 holiday season.
